Subject: Level 2 BTEC Applied Science
BTEC First qualifications were originally designed for use in colleges, schools and the workplace as an introductory Level 2 course for learners wanting to study in the context of a vocational sector. Level 2 BTEC Applied Science is an ideal course for students who are considering a future in a Science related profession. The course will develop understanding of understanding of biology, chemistry and physics and the theories and practices involved in each area.at the universe and environment, the living body and health applications of life sciences, as well as exploring science as an industry, its related services and what jobs and careers are available in the field.
BTECs are vocationally related qualifications, where learners develop knowledge and understanding by applying their learning and skills in a work-related context. They encourage learners to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop skills that are essential for the modern-day workplace. These skills include: team working; working from a prescribed brief; working to deadlines; presenting information effectively; and accurately completing administrative tasks and processes. In addition to these skills, students will develop their practical skills and develop a good understanding of health and safety. BTEC Firsts motivate learners, and open doors to progression into further study and responsibility within the workplace.
You will study 8 mandatory units through the course, which make up the two awards. Six of the units are coursework based units, and two are externally examined. Each unit is grades at Pass, Merit or Distinction. The topics studied are:
First Award in Principles of Science: Principles of Science (Externally examined), Chemistry and Our Earth, Energy and Our Universe, Biology and Our Environment
First Award in Applications of Science: Applications of Chemical Substances, Applications of Physical Science, Health Applications of Life Sciences, Scientific Skills (Externally Examined)
The skills and knowledge you gain on the course will enable you to progress to the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma or Diploma in Applied Science or get an entry-level job in a range of scientific areas.
