Finals Day at the White Rose Schools Rugby Series

Rugby finals day

Our year 8 Rugby Union team was entered into the White Rose Schools Rugby Series tournament at the start of the year along with over forty schools from across Yorkshire, along with some of the region’s top rugby playing schools. The team had to play in 5 Bradford Area tournaments throughout the year and their playing record was as follows…

Played 20 Won 19 Lost 1

This meant we were Bradford area champions and qualified for the all Yorkshire finals day along with Bingley Grammar, Ermysted’s Grammar, Ripon Grammar and Rodillian Academy, Wakefield.

The finals day was played on 19/4/16and the squad performed admirably. We were playing against schools who play a lot of rugby and have traditional fixtures played on Saturdays so it was always going to be tough. The lads did themselves proud and earned a draw against Bingley in the opening fixture, the only team who had beaten us previously. In the next match we had to defend heroically against Rodillian, but unfortunately paid for this effort and ended up losing 2 tries to nil. After this the lads tired on what was a hot April day and went on to lose the next two games.

To finish as the 5th best school in the whole of Yorkshire at U13s is a great achievement and the lads have been a credit to the school throughout the season. Special mention must go to Jacob McLaughlin who scored all of the teams tries on the finals day.

The Team: Jacob McLoughlin 8G, Tom Doyle 8B, Darren Sjolander 8C, Yenukua Anarwat 8B, Damola Shofoluwe 8C, Joseph Kirton 8C, Matthew Buckley 8C, Kian Gallagher 8B, Jacob Angus 8C, Joseph Nhandara 8C, Ben Leonard 8C, Isaac Oldcorn 8C, Darwin King 8B, Josh Day 8H, James Hebb 8F, Sam Chewins 8B.

It has been a pleasure to coach this squad this year and I look forward to further success at U14!
