First rugby league match for Year 7 against Tong

Y7 rugby team

Year 7 rugby team embarked on their first ever fixture away at Tong High School. All of the boys had never played rugby league before tonight and have been training together for only 3 weeks so tonight was going to be a daunting task against an opposition who had 9 or 10 regular rugby players!

They game started with Tong kicking off, and they regained the ball straight away to score after only a minute in the clock. A knock on from the kick off enabled us to have the ball in our hands and after good drives from Hedier Awudu and Jimmy O'Neil Tolley enabled Adam Tellelonge to dance through the defence for an equalising try. The game then settled down and the boys were starting to enjoy their experience. The next try went to Tong when their number 8 who was at least 6 foot powered past our defence to put Tong back in front, but this didn't put our boys off and Heider Awudu stormed half the length of the field after good build up from Danae Faal to square the game up at half time to 10-10.

The second half started slowly for SBSJ as Tong ran in 2 early tries to go 20-10 up and the signs were ominous for the boys at this point in the game. To their credit though they kept going and were rewarded withan excellent try scored by Omari Superville under the sticks to take the score to 20-16.

At this point in the game confidence was sky high and the lads could sense that the bigger and stronger Tong team were starting to tire in the heat. With 3 minutes left on the clock a clever break from Adam Terrelonge left a gap in the Tong defence which he exploited excellently to score in the corner to make the score 20-20!

Tong who thought they we would walk this game then decided to have one last throw of the dice but our defence held tight to see out the game earning them a fantastic result!

I was so proud of them all and after the game during the debrief the boys and myself were approached by a Bradford Bulls scout who was watching the game. He commented on how well they had done considering they'd never played before and were a credit to our school. He was so enthusiastic about their performance he's asked me let him know when we are playing next so he can come and watch them again!
