Year 9: Parent/Carer Introduction to the New GCSEs in English and Mathematics
6.00 – 7.00pm Tuesday 12 July 2016 Our Lady’s Hall, Ignis, Cunliffe Road BD8 7AP
As many of you will know, new specifications, assessment criteria and grading systems have been introduced in both English and mathematics as part of the Department for Education’s strategy to increase the rigour of examinations at Key Stage Four. In mathematics, the level of difficulty and the course content has increased and in English the removal of the coursework element makes the final grade completely dependent on the terminal examination of the two year course.
English and mathematics are viewed by employers, colleges and universities as basic, essential subjects of study and, for all students, an indispensable requirement to pursue further study in all subjects. In school, we have adapted teaching approaches to ensure that students are well prepared for the challenge that these new qualifications present, with a focus on deep learning and the long term retention of knowledge, skills and understanding.
As your child prepares to begin these courses in September we would like to share the key information on the changes with all Year 9 parents/carers, as well as giving recommendations on how students can best be supported at home and some useful websites and revision guides. We strongly recommend that you attend this important event to make sure you are fully informed and best prepared to support your child in these crucial subjects.
Please complete and return the reply slip by Friday 9 July. Click here for letter
Many thanks for your continued support.
