Members of Bradford Catholic Youth Choir, based at St Bede's and St Joseph's, have excelled during a busy week and a half which has seen them perform at the launch of Bradford Council's Economic Strategy, sing for two BBC Radio 4 broadcasts and win all the youth choir awards at a music festival!
Members of the Girls' Choir (many of them students from St Bede’s and St Joseph’s) were invited by Bradford Couil to represent the young people of the city, and their talent and potential, at the prestigious launch of the council's Economic Strategy at Kala Sangam. They performed to guests including the Chief Executive of the council, Kersten England, the Leader of the council, Susan Hinchcliffe and speakers Dave Baldwin (former CEO of Bradford City FC) and Sir Richard Leese.
A week later they were in Manchester broadcasting BBC Radio 4's Daily Service in Manchester, with a 6.15am departure from Ignis.
The music was a challenging mixture of hymns and sacred music for Lenten meditation, in a range of styles including a classical piece by French composer Leo Delibes, and an exciting American spiritual arranged by Andre Thomas.
This was broadcast live on Tuesday morning, with a second broadcast pre-recorded for the following day. The producers and staff from the BBC were highly impressed with the girls’ sound and professional attitude. The Diocesan Director of Music, Benjamin Saunders, said, “A superb broadcast today, in fact the sound quality was far better than I have heard for a long time. The words were crystal clear and tuning was spot on…the choir should be delighted.”
Just two days later both the Girls' and the Boys' Choirs were competing in Skipton Music Festival. Following a short rehearsal at Ignis, they travelled by coach to Skipton where they enjoyed a substantial fish and chip tea. This didn't have an impact on the quality of their singing however, with the Girls' Choir winning both the Youth Choir classes, and the Boys' Choir coming a very close second.
You can listen to their BBC broadcasts again on the BBC iPlayer, following these links.
