St Bede's and St Joseph's Catholic College

Drama

Subject Intent

The Drama Curriculum at St Bede’s and St Joseph’s Catholic College aims to enhance creativity, self-confidence, artistic appreciation, cultural awareness, and vital life skills such as teamwork, communication, and self-awareness. Students explore performance, role-play, and characterisation in a supportive environment, continually improving their physical, vocal, and technical skills.

Students develop pieces inspired by scripts, historical events, social issues, and emotions, fostering self-reflection and a deeper understanding of others' perspectives. Drama nurtures creativity, empathy, and cultural awareness while promoting resilience, adaptability, and problem-solving. It also equips students with transferable skills like public speaking and collaboration for future education and life.

Students are assessed on devising, performing, and evaluating their skills in both rehearsal and performance, with regular formative and summative assessments. The curriculum is inclusive, supporting all students regardless of their starting point, with targeted interventions to close learning gaps.

The curriculum builds skills in historical, cultural, and stylistic theatre, helping students connect with playwrights, practitioners, and performance techniques to gain a broader appreciation of drama and its impact on the world.
