St Bede's and St Joseph's Catholic College

Leeds Lieder Project

SBSJ Students Steal the Show at Pudsey Civic Hall!
On the morning of March 21st, 2025, a talented group of singers from Saint Bede's and St Joseph's Catholic College took the stage at Pudsey Civic Hall for an exciting event featuring six schools from Leeds and Bradford. And let’s just say – we owned the stage!
Our students delivered an unforgettable performance – loud, energetic, in perfect harmony, with character and volume that truly made an impact – and left the audience buzzing. They didn’t just sing, they shone, and we couldn’t be prouder.
So, what made this performance so special?
It all began with the Living Lieder Project, where our students worked with a team from Leeds Lieder, including an opera singer, pianist, and poet. This project brings professional performers into secondary schools, helping students learn a song from the world of classical music, focusing on top-notch performance techniques and exploring the text through their own creative responses.
Through two intense workshops, our students learned to bring the music of American composer Aaron Copland to life. Known for his rich blend of classical and folk influences, Copland’s music gave our singers the perfect material to showcase their skills.
And they didn’t stop there! They even showed up early for extra practice before the performance, putting in the hard work to make sure they gave their very best. Parents were invited to watch, making it an even more memorable day!
