Monday saw our Year 9 rugby team take on Mr Cheetham's old home of Whitcliffe Mount Cleckheaton in the Yorkshire Plate Round 1 . The game started very slowly for SBSJ conceding an early try in the corner after a number of missed tackles. SBSJ then burst into life after a Whitcliffe Mount mistake with Jack Savage beating 7 men to score under the posts and coverting his kick.
After a series of good defensive sets SBSJ then went through and scored again with some big drives by the Handol twins and finally a score under the posts by Alex Handol to make the score 12-4. Again after another great defensive effort keeping Whitcliffe Mount inside their own half SBSJ smashed through the line with a great offload from Josh Milnes to Ethan Downey who crashed over on the corner to make it 16 - 4. After a brief lapse in concentration from the resulting kick off SBSJ let Whitcliffe Mount sneaked in the corner for a score and converting the try to make the score 16 - 10 at the break.
In the second half SBSJ came out really fired up with Kyle Medas showing his defensive prowess again felling attackers at will. This built up alot of pressure and Josh Milnes crashed over for a try which was converted by Jack Savage. 22-10 SBSJ then continued to pile on the pressure with Owen Rodil driving over in the corner and again Jack Savage added the extras from a tight angle. 28-10
A great performance by all the boys and we now move on to play St Mary's Menston in a local catholic school derby.
Man of the match - Ethan Downey and Kyle Medas
