U18 Water Polo Team Through To The Finals

U18 team

Yesterday the under 18 Water Polo team travelled to Bedford Modern School to take part in the English Schools Semi Final.

As you can see from the results below it was a very pleasing and successful afternoon for St Bede's and St Joseph's Catholic College, winning all 3 games meaning we finished 1st and progress through to the U18 English Schools Plate Final which is the third year in a row!

SBSJ   3 - 1   St Paul's London
SBSJ   7 - 6   London Oratory
SBSJ   4 - 3   Bedford Modern School

Man of the tournament - Daniel Colehan 11C

The Team:
Matthew McLoughlin 13B, Benn Adams 13F, Lewis Lunn 13L, Simon McDermott 12E, Sam Rocchio 12I, Dominic Walker 11C, Jack Sheehan 11A, Daniel Colehan 11C, Cameron Fairbairn 10A, Luke Sutcliffe 11D.

SBSJ   3 - 1   St Paul's London

Our first game was up against St Paul's who we know pretty well having played them in the 2014 and 2015 Final losing the first time and managing a draw last year. The team were really fired up and determined to finally get a win. We started brightly creating a number of chances, scoring 1 in the first half and limited them to long pots shots which never troubled us. The second half was a much tighter affair and once again as he has done all season our young in form goalkeeper Cameron 'The Cat' Fairbairn (10A) kept us in front pulling off some fantastic saves and then assisted in the counter attacks spearheaded by Daniel Colehan (11C). The match ended 3 - 1 which filled us with confidence going into the next game.

SBSJ   7 - 6   London Oratory

On paper this should have been a game we would normally win convincingly but as always in sport and in life nothing is for certain and you can't take anything for granted! The team started well scoring 2 goals early on through our 'Pit Man' Simon McDermott (12E). However for some reason we then switched off and before we knew it the opposition were 3 - 2 up! Once again the team showed their determination and managed to get back in front going into half time leading 4 - 3. It was then the opposition who came back fighting getting a couple of lucky deflected shots which we had to pick out of the back the net. The score was 6 - 4 to London Oratory with little more than two minutes remaining. What happened next was pure inspiration. Every single player dug deep and stepped it up another 3 or 4 gears which was too much for the opposition to handle. All the players deserve a huge amount of credit for the comeback but the headlines have to go to Daniel Colehan (11C) who ended up scoring 4 during the game one of which was the winning goal. The score ended 7 - 6 meaning we were guaranteed a place in the U18 English Schools Plate Final for a third year in a row.

SBSJ   4 - 3   Bedford Modern School

No sooner had the final whistle gone from our previous game we were told we had to play BMS straight after, so our celebrations had to be put on hold. The boys were understandably dead on their feet but to their credit give it everything they had to put in one final performance. At half time we were 3 - 1 down and it was difficult to have a go at them. All I said to the team was you are through to the final but lets make sure everyone here remembers us! Once again as this particular group of players always seem to do what they do best, they stepped up and took the game by the scruff of the neck and came out winners with the final score ending 4 - 3.

As always with all the Water Polo teams the lads showed through their attitude and behaviour just what it takes to be a representative of school. To top it off we played some excellent Water Polo and managed 3 fantastic results.

Well done to all involved and well done St Bede's and St Joseph's Catholic College!
