Wednesday the 30th January saw our year 11 students traveling to Harrogate to the Royal Theatre to listen to some of the best living British poets delivering their own work. The chief examiner of English literature was also there and gave us a masterclasses in how to answer poetry questions.
Poetry Live was more than being prepped for the forthcoming examination, it was an education in how to write poetry and the validity of reader’s own interpretations when backed up with evidence from the poem. It was no surprise that John Agard made the playlist on the way home. He was superb and encouraged the students to look beyond the exams to recognise the importance of words in daily usage. Prophet-like he reminded us that ‘language defines you so make it your ally.’
This was a great day with wonderful students.
